Growing up in Shanghai, I often like to explore around and find artistic elements that are hidden in the city. For my project, I want to decorate my surroundings with my art to reflect on the way we interact with the world and identify what I value as an artist. As I experimented with many different mediums, I started incorporate Augmented Reality elements since it's a developing tchnologies that has the potential to change the way we experience the world in many ways. My goal is to decorate our city with artwork making the environment an inspiring space without any physical impact.
I started this project by creating surreal drawings based on organic forms, which allows me to make connections to my unconscious mind and often surprises me with creative ideas. I then used those drawings on different surfaces to see where they belong the most.
Taking my art form and pushing it to a larger scale, I want to keep the surreal elements in my style while adapting to different surfaces without taking away its own identity. The goal is to show that creativity and imagination comes from a space without limitation even when they appear in the most restricted areas, such as this discarded plane on the streets of Detroit.
Being able to create visuals with different mediums allows me to compare different ways of establishing presence and sharing creativity. A lot of it has to do with our sensitivities and emotions. To reflect on my project, I created a painting based on my process. The goal is to remind myself that no matter where my physical presence is, my imagination and creativity goes beyond limitation and I want to inspire others to feel the same when they visit the places that I’ve been.
